Learning a language with Facebook

Facebook like

Social media platforms have made it so much easier to learn a second language. Instead of having to buy books or software the ability to learn a second language is in your hands every time you log into your Facebook account. Facebook currently has millions of users from across nearly every country on this planet, that means the chances of not finding a friend is very low or a language you want is very low. Here are three ways you can use Facebook to learn a foreign language.

Adding friends friends-icon

If you meet a person who speaks a foreign language that you are learning and you feel comfortable enough, then add them to your friends list. This friend will be very helpful for you in learning a second language. For starters most of their updates will be in their native language. You will also get links to pages in that language. You can have Facebook chats in that language with your new friend, also this friend can give you links to other speakers of the language and you can connect with them too, hence over time building a list of contact in your target language. I have done this and it helped a lot, it gives you the ability to practice by just signing into your Facebook. Facebook is also integrated with Skype so having a vid chat is also possible.

Changing language setting.

Facebook currently supports 80+ languages, meaning the chances of not seeing your language is very unlikely. Imagine being surrounded by the language you are learning, in an environment where you are forced to learn the language. Maybe you cannot afford travel to a foreign country so why not change your Facebook language. If you spend a lot of time on Facebook, turn it into a learning experience. I have learned so many words and phrases by just changing the language of my Facebook. Also there comes time when you have to use your intuition to find out a meaning of a word. So, changing your language setting will definitely help you learn a language.

Following foreign pages

These could be personalities, funny pages or even companies but just follow these pages so you can get regular updates in that language. You can read comments and even participate yourself. Let’s say you are learning Japanese and you want a Japanese page to follow. Look at big franchises such as Pizza hut, look to see if they have a Japanese page. Just like that you know have a page in your target language to follow. You can also look for famous Japanese singers or entertainers on Facebook and like their page.

Conclusion

There are many ways out there and learning a language with Facebook is just one. You just have to look around and make the best out of everything you have.
